Godzilla Minus One (2023) by Takashi Yamazaki had the effect of lightning in a bottle. The story of a postwar Japanese ex-kamikaze pilot who is grieving and sees Godzilla as the ultimate symbol of his nation's sorrows and regrets proved to be both deeply moving and surprisingly hopeful. Everything from the period setting, personal stakes, and genuinely horrifying scale of destruction came together perfectly. Naturally, the Oscar-winning VFX merit their own mention because they outperform many larger Hollywood blockbusters. Therefore, how could Yamazaki possibly make a sequel to any of that? Well, Godzilla Minus Zero (2026) suggests it’s not about going “bigger” per se, but definitely bolder and riskier. The final product is something that simply could not be produced in the West.

It’s impressive that, for how different Godzilla Minus Zero can feel from Minus One at times, it still stays true to its predecessor’s themes of a nation struggling with its identity post-WWII. To address the elephant (or Kaiju) in the room, King Ghidorah is present, and the recognizable golden dragon is at his most terrifying. The fact that Toho has kept Ghidorah hidden from all the marketing, aside from hints of yellow lightning on the posters and hearing his signature roar in trailers, is extremely commendable. It is commendable not only due to the fact that contemporary Hollywood marketing frequently gives away the majority of the surprises, but also due to the fact that Ghidorah is arguably the focal point of this sequel, receiving more screen time than Godzilla.
Make your way to the Dragon of All Dragons.
Two years after defeating Godzilla, in 1949, Dr. The new Special Disaster Response Bureau in Japan is led by Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka). As the country continues to rebuild, an unforeseen extraterrestrial threat emerges, putting all its progress at risk. Noda and his fellow scientists are baffled by this new creature because it appears to be on the way to doing more damage than Godzilla did and has no weaknesses. However, a solution is sought by Noda's team, which now includes female meteorologist Makoto Aoyama (Masami Nagasawa) and senior professor Kanji Murakami (Min Tanaka). Enter pilot Kichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and his wife Noriko (Minami Hamabe), who have miraculously found some peace while raising their young daughter Akiko (Sae Nagatani) since the attacks of Godzilla.
The Shikishima family is still at the center of the script by Takashi Yamazaki, who is also the director. In Minus One, where tragedy brought them together by chance amid literal piles of rubble, their dynamic was extremely gripping. As a new family, their love for one another is unlike any other and more intense than ever. Yet their nation’s call to action once again unfairly tests how much they are willing to sacrifice. However, this conflict also involves Japan and the United States, as well as Godzilla, who reemerges in a more muscular form with upgraded scales. An intriguing struggle for political power lies beneath the surface of this Kaiju conflict. Who gets to decide what these enormous monsters leave behind when the dust has settled?
Defying the Godzilla Sequels' tropes
It was hard for many fans, including myself, to believe that Takashi Yamazaki would follow Godzilla Minus One with a sequel that introduced a different monster. It is absurd that it is King Ghidorah, possibly the most well-known foe in Godzilla's 72-year history! Despite this, Godzilla: Minus Zero is unlike any other Godzilla sequel. Many of the well-known tropes of the franchise are brilliantly subverted by Yamazaki, such as making Godzilla into a "lethal protector" of nature that the audience is supposed to root for from the beginning. This isn’t a classic “versus” sequel either, as the primary conflict goes beyond the film’s two monsters. First and foremost, Minus Zero is a story about rage, sacrifice, and the endless cycles of bloodshed that war and greed perpetuate.
Considering the levels of grief in Minus One,
Yamazaki's approach to this sequel feels much angrier than it did before. The only way to stop Ghidorah was for Dr. Noda has no choice but to prepare a Godzilla-friendly battlefield. Ideally, the victor will sustain fatal wounds or, even better, they will eliminate each other permanently. The decision to forcibly pit the two against each other will definitely come at the cost of more Japanese lives, though. It’s like playing God with two literal Gods of unlimited power, which puts our human protagonists in great distress. It is especially cruel that such a verdict once more falls on them after everything they have gone through.
Humans as Weapons of War Godzilla Minus Zero presents its returning cast with an immense challenge. Yamazaki pushes his characters to their emotional limits in the sequels to their arcs from Minus One. Any of these performances may have veered too far into melodramatic territory due to mental exhaustion and desperateness. The cast fully embraces the story's anger and frustration, even though Yamazaki's screenplay clearly leans toward melodrama at times to elicit a stronger reaction from viewers. Ryunosuke Kamiki reveals more of Kōichi’s tender side as a loving father to Akiko, making the former kamikaze pilot’s possible regrets as a “tool of war” even more unbearable when he’s asked to take to the skies again for his country in the battle against another seemingly unbeatable monster.

Minami Hamabe reprises her role as Noriko Shikishima, demonstrating the resilience and bravery required in terrifying times of uncertainty. Dr. Hidetaka Yoshioka, the film's master planner, is played by Hidetaka Yoshioka. Noda. In point of fact, he is the only character that keeps everyone together. He has a personal connection to the Shikishima family from Minus One and is now responsible for leading Japan's sole intelligence task force against Kaiju. In doing so, he also acts as an unlikely mentor for Masami, the skilled weather forecaster for Makoto Aoyama, and as a voice of reason for Professor Kanji, the bereaved biologist for Min Tanaka. In Godzilla Minus Zero, Yoshioka's selfless performance stands out for these reasons.
Takashi Yamazaki bravely challenges the odds
Returning to Professor Kanji, his plot in Godzilla Minus Zero is just one of many that will truly shock viewers. A man who survived both the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Godzilla’s attack on Ginza from the previous installment, there are no words to describe his psychological turmoil. The portrayal of Japanese trauma by Takashi Yamazaki is uncompromising, resulting in some of the most emotionally charged visuals of any movie released this year. Minus Zero is the first R-rated Godzilla film in history, and it earns that title with nuance.

The way Yamazaki depicts devastation and violence is horrifying and frequently quite graphic, which is significantly more than what Western audiences typically see. However, this is not done solely for the purpose of shocking the audience.
